Gallup: Herman Cain’s ‘Positive Intensity’ Surges; Obama Hits All-Time Low Among Blacks

(CNSNews.com) - A week after African American Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain saw his “positive intensity” score surge in the Gallup poll—hitting what Gallup says is the highest level for any candidate this year--President Barack Obama’s job approval among blacks dropped to an all-time low.
Only 80 percent of blacks told Gallup in the week that ended on Oct. 9 that they approved of the way Obama was handling his job as president, Gallup reported today. Previously, Obama’s lowest approval rating among blacks was the 81 percent he earned in the weeks that ended on March 6 and August 14 of this year.
Obama’s highest all-time approval among blacks was 96 percent--a level it reached during five different weeks of 2009, Obama's first year in office.
After hitting his previous low of 81 percent approval among blacks in the second week of August, Obama’s approval among blacks had rebounded, rising to as high as 87 percent in the week that ended Sept. 25. Two weeks ago, Obama’s approval was still at 85 percent among blacks, before dropping to its new low of 80 percent last week.
Last week, Gallup reported that a survey concluded on Oct. 2 indicated that Herman Cain’s “positive intensity” score was surging among Republicans and Republican-leaning independents. “Positive intensity,” Gallup explains is the number of people who say they have a strongly favorable opinion of a candidate minus the percentage of people who say they have a strongly negative opinion of a candidate.
Cain, the former CEO of Godfathers Pizza, earned a positive intensity score of 30 in Gallup’s latest polling of Republican candidates. That was up from the positive intensity score of 22 Cain had earned in a Gallup poll concluded in September.Cain’s latest positive intensity score of 30, Gallup said, is “the highest of any candidate this year.”
In fact, among annonced Republican presidential candidates, Cain's positive intensity score was twice as high as the next highest scoring candidate, Texas Gov. Rick Perry, who had a positive intensity score of 15. Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney at 13 had the third highest positive intensity score. Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich had a score of 11, former Sen. Rick Santorum had a score of 8, Rep. Michele Bachmann had a score of 5, Rep. Ron Paul had a score of 3 and former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman had a positive intensity score of 1.
