NANCY PELOSI EXCOMMUNICATED BY POPE BENEDICT XVI ?

NANCY PELOSI

Not likely! Nancy Pelosi was in Rome last week and had a private audience with Pope Benedict XVI. The audience took place in a small room off of the usual salon where audiences are held and there was no photographer present and there was no press release following the the 15 minute conversation between the Pope and Pelosi. A Vatican spokesman would only say that the Pope told Pelosi that human life was sacred and had to be protected from conception to natural death.

Pelosi, who is 100% pro-abortion took a huge chance by going to see the Pope. Her notoriety preceeded her and the Pope could easily have imposed some kind of penalty on her such as denying her the right to receive Holy Communion. While some would have liked to see her excommunicated by the Pope it was not likely to happen.

There is a huge difference between the way modern popes excercise the powers of the Keys of the Kingdom compared with popes of past centuries. One immediately thinks of Pope Gregory VII's excommunication of the Holy Roman Emperor Henry IV in 1075 and of Henry standing barefoot in the snow outside the papal palace in Canossa for three days until the Pope lifted the excommunication. Or, of Pius V's exommunicatin of Elizabeth I in 1570.

It is up to the American bishops to invoke Canon 915 against Pelosi, denying her Holy Communion; but don't hold your breath waiting for it to happen!
