HELP! SOMEBODY HELP ME! I GOT GOVERNMENT ON THE BRAIN AND I CAN'T FIND ME NO BRAIN SURGEON!

If you believe the White House,

there are 30 million Americans who support a government health care takeover.

But if you look at the funding behind the Obamacare campaign,

it's the same few leftist billionaires, union bosses and partisan community organizers

pushing the socialized medicine agenda.

Let's connect the dots.

On Thursday, a national "grass roots" coalition called Health Care for America Now will march on Capitol Hill to demand universal health care.

The ground troops won't have to march very far. HCAN, you see, is no heartland network. It is headquartered at 1825 K Street in Washington, D.C. — smack dab in the middle of Beltway lobby land.

In fact, 1825 K Street is Ground Zero for a plethora of "progressive" groups subsidized by anti-war, anti-Republican, Big Nanny special interests. Around Washington, the office complex is known as "The Other K Street."

The Washington Post noted in 2007 that "its most prominent tenants form an abbreviated who's who of well-funded allies of the Democratic Party. Big money from unions such as the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) and the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, as well as the Internet-fueled MoveOn, has provided groups like those at 1825 K Street the wherewithal to mount huge campaigns."

MoveOn, of course, is the recreational political vehicle of radical liberal sugar daddy George Soros.

The magnate's financial fingerprints are all over the HCAN coalition, which includes MoveOn, the action fund of the Center for American Progress (a Soros think tank) and the Campaign for America's Future (a pro-welfare state lobbying outfit).

HCAN has a $40 million budget, with $10 million pitched in by the Atlantic Philanthropies — a Bermuda-based organization fronted by Soros acolyte Gara LaMarche.

Also in the money mix: notorious Democratic donors Herb and Marion Sandler, the left-wing moguls who made billions selling subprime mortgages and helped Soros fund his vast network of left-wing activist satellites.

By their side is billionaire Peter Lewis of Progressive Insurance, whose "Progressive Future" youth group has dispatched clueless volunteers armed with clipboards and literature bashing Rush Limbaugh and Fox News to scare up support for Obamacare.

And two more left-wing heavyweights joining the HCAN parade: the corruption-plagued SEIU (which has battled numerous embezzlement scandals among its chapters across the country while crusading for consumer and patients' rights) and Obama's old chums at fraud-riddled Acorn, the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now.

Acorn and HCAN are linked by left-wing philanthropist Drummond Pike, who heads the nonprofit Tides Foundation-Tides Center. As the tax disclaimer for HCAN discloses, "HCAN is related to Health Care for America Education Fund, a project of The Tides Center, a section 501(c)(3) public charity."

For decades, the Tides Center and its parent organization, the Tides Foundation, have seeded some of the country's most radical activist groups of the left, including the communist-friendly United for Peace and Justice, the jihadist-friendly National Lawyers Guild and the grievance-mongering Council on American-Islamic Relations.

Pike is the same philanthropist who assisted Acorn founder Wade Rathke after his brother, Dale, was caught embezzling nearly $1 million from the group.

Wade Rathke sits on the Tides Foundation board of directors. In a conspiracy to cover up Dale Rathke's massive theft of funds, Pike volunteered to buy a promissory note worth $800,000 to cover the debt. These are the populist do-gooders supposedly looking out for you and your health.

Why do they want Obamacare? An internal Acorn memo I obtained from August 2008 makes the motives clear:

"Over our 38 years, health care organizing has never been a major focus either nationally or locally for Acorn," wrote Acorn Philadelphia regional director Craig Robbins. "But increasingly, Acorn offices around the country are doing work on health care." The goal: "Building Acorn Power."

The memo outlines the Acorn-HCAN partnership and their strategy of opposing any programs that rely on "unregulated private insurance" — and then parlaying political victory on government-run health care "to move our Acorn agenda (or at least part of it) with key electeds that we might otherwise not be able to pull off."

The objective, in other words, is to piggyback and exploit Obamacare to improve and protect their political health.

The "grass roots" movement is not about representing Main Street. It's about peddling influence and power at 1825 K Street.

WITH WHOM SHOULD AMERICA STAND -- THE BLOODY TYRANNY OR THE PEOPLE OPPOSING IT?

THE CHOICE PRESENTED by the democracy protests in Iran could hardly have been clearer.

On one side: a brutal theocratic regime that jails and tortures its critics at home and is a deadly sponsor of terrorism abroad; that loudly proclaims its enmity for the United States and has murdered many Americans to prove it; that barely conceals its drive to amass a nuclear arsenal; that lusts openly for the annihilation of Israel; that for 30 years has pursued a far-flung Islamist jihad.

On the other side: throngs of Iranians calling for an end to their government's abuses.

With whom should America stand -- the bloody tyranny or the people opposing it? For most Americans the question surely answers itself, which is why both houses of Congress voted all but unanimously last week to condemn the Iranian government and support the protesters' embrace of human rights, civil liberties, and the rule of law.

So why was President Obama's response initially so muted and ambivalent? Why was he more interested in preserving "dialogue" with Iran's dictatorial rulers than in providing moral support for their freedom-seeking subjects? Why did it take him until yesterday to declare that Americans are "appalled and outraged" by Iran's violent crackdown and to "strongly condemn" the vicious attacks on peaceful dissenters?

A disconcerting answer to those questions appears in the new issue of Commentary, where Johns Hopkins University scholar Joshua Muravchik isolates the most striking feature of the young Obama administration's foreign policy: "its indifference to the issues of human rights and democracy."

In an essay titled "The Abandonment of Democracy," Muravchik -- the author, most recently, of The Next Founders: Voices of Democracy in the Middle East -- observes that every president since Jimmy Carter has made the advancement of democracy and human rights one of his foreign-policy objectives. Now, he writes, "this tradition has been ruptured by the Obama administration."

The rupture was telegraphed at a pre-inauguration meeting with the Washington Post, during which the incoming president argued that "freedom from want and freedom from fear" are more urgent than democracy, and that "oftentimes an election can just backfire" if corruption isn't fixed first. Muravchik points out that when Obama gave Al-Arabiya, an Arabic-language satellite channel, his first televised interview as president, he focused on US relations with the Middle East and Muslim world, yet "never mentioned democracy or human rights."

In February, Obama traveled to Camp Lejeune, N.C., to announce his timetable for withdrawing US troops from Iraq. His strategy, he said, was staked to the "clear and achievable goal" of "an Iraq that is sovereign, stable, and self-reliant." But other than a glancing reference to the extremely successful Iraqi election that had taken place a few weeks earlier, he again had nothing to say about democracy.

Muravchik isn't the only one to have noticed Obama's reticence on the subject. In its editorial on the Iraqi election, which it termed a "political triumph," the Washington Post celebrated Iraq's progress "toward becoming the moderate Arab democracy that the Bush administration long hoped for." Ironically, it noted, the greatest beneficiary of that election "may be President Obama, who has been a skeptic both of progress in Iraq and the value of elections in unstable states." Bush would have cheered the Iraqi vote as further evidence of the country's political and democratic advance. But Obama merely acknowledged that the election made it easier to withdraw "a substantial number" of US troops.

By April, former New York Times correspondent Joel Brinkley was explaining "How 'democracy' got to be a dirty word" in the new administration. Since taking office more than 10 weeks earlier, he wrote, "neither President Obama nor Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton has even uttered the word democracy in a manner related to democracy promotion." Of the 30 releases issued by the State Department's Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor, "not one . . . has discussed democracy promotion. Democracy, it seems, is banished from the Obama administration's public vocabulary."

Authoritarian regimes, naturally, have welcomed the new approach. According to the Associated Press, Egypt's ambassador to the United States expressed satisfaction "that ties are on the mend and that Washington has dropped conditions for better relations, including demands for 'human rights, democracy and religious and general freedoms.'" And just as Team Obama has downplayed democracy and human-rights efforts in the Middle East, it has done so as well with regard to China, Russia, and even Sudan. "Obama seems to believe that democracy is overrated, or at least overvalued," Muravchik writes.

Obama may see himself as the un-Bush, cool to democracy because his predecessor was so keen for it. But to millions of subjugated human beings, he is the leader of the free world -- an avatar of the democratic freedoms they hunger for. On the streets of Iran recently, many protesters held signs reading "Where Is My Vote?" There are limits to what the American president can do for Iran's beleaguered democrats. But is it too much to ask that he take their question seriously?

GEORGE ORWELLS BOOK TURNS 60 YEARS OLD

NINETEEN EIGHTY-FOUR opens
with one of the most famous first lines in modern English literature --
the vaguely unnerving
"It was a bright cold day in April, and the clocks were striking thirteen."
The line it ends with is even more famous, and considerably more sinister:
"He loved Big Brother."

George Orwell's brilliant, bitter novel
turns 60 this month,
but after all these years it has lost none of its nightmarish chill.
Its hero is the decidedly unheroic Winston Smith,
a weak and wistful man who lives in the totalitarian police state of Oceania,
which is ruled by the Party
-- personified in Big Brother, whose intimidating image is everywhere --
and in which the Thought Police ruthlessly suppress any hint of dissent.
The Party enforces its will through constant surveillance, relentless propaganda,
and the annihilation of anyone who rebels against its authority,
even if only in private thoughts or conversation.
Winston engages in such thought-crimes,
first by secretly recording his hatred of Big Brother in a diary,
then through a love-affair with a young woman called Julia.
Eventually he is arrested, interrogated, tortured, broken.

Nineteen Eighty-Four was Orwell's warning
of what unchecked state power can become --
a warning informed by the horrors of Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union,

their cult of personality, their unremitting cruelty and deceit.
"I do not believe that the kind of society I describe necessarily will arrive, but I believe . . . that something resembling it could arrive,"
Orwell wrote shortly after the book was published.

Orwell himself was a committed socialist, and he insisted that Nineteen Eighty-Four should not be taken as an attack on socialism or parties of the left. And, in truth, though the ruling ideology in the book is named Ingsoc ("English Socialism" in Oceania's fictional language of Newspeak), the Party's aims have nothing to do with collectivizing wealth, or creating a workers' paradise, or any other socialist prescription.

"The Party seeks power entirely for its own sake," Winston is told by O'Brien, the Party official who interrogates him. "We are not interested in the good of others; we are interested solely in power. Not wealth or luxury or long life or happiness: only power, pure power. . . . We know that no one ever seizes power with the intention of relinquishing it. Power is not a means, it is an end. One does not establish a dictatorship in order to safeguard a revolution; one makes the revolution in order to establish the dictatorship. The object of persecution is persecution. The object of torture is torture. The object of power is power. Now do you begin to understand me?"

Whether or not poor Winston understood, the totalitarians (and would-be totalitarians) of 1949 certainly did. Stalin's Pravda blasted Nineteen Eighty-Four for its supposed "contempt for the people," while the American Communist journal Masses and Mainstream, in a review titled "Maggot-of-the-Month," trashed it as a "diatribe against the human race" and "cynical rot." But in most of the free world it was acclaimed as an instant classic. "No other work of this generation," declared The New York Times in its review, "has made us desire freedom more earnestly or loathe tyranny with such fullness."

Even now, it is hard to think of any novel that can match Nineteen Eighty-Four in its insight into the totalitarian mindset. Orwell captured so much of it: The insatiable lust for power. The lies incessantly broadcast as truth. The assault on free thought as both sickness and crime. The corruption of language. The brazen rewriting of history. The use of technology to make privacy impossible. The repression of sexuality. Above all, the zealous crushing of individual identity and liberty. "If you want a picture of the future," O'Brien tells Winston during his interrogation and torture, imagine a boot stamping on a human face -- for ever."

From "Big Brother" to "Thought Police" to "unperson" to "doublethink," it is no coincidence that so many of the terms Orwell coined for Nineteen Eighty-Four -- to say nothing of the word "Orwellian" itself -- have become part of our lexicon for life without freedom. Tragically, Orwell died at 46, just seven months after Nineteen Eighty-Four appeared, but 60 years later his great work survives, its power undiminished, its warning more urgent than ever.

WASHINGTON D.C., April 1, 2009: In a move certain to fuel the debate over Obama's qualifications for the presidency, the group "Americans for Freedom of Information" has released copies of President Obama's college transcripts from Occidental College. Released today, the transcript indicates that Obama, under the name Barry Soetoro, received financial aid as a foreign student from Indonesia as an undergraduate at the school. The transcript was released by Occidental College in compliance with a court order in a suit brought by the group in the Superior Court of California. The transcript shows that Obama (Soetoro) applied for financial aid and was awarded a fellowship for foreign students from the Fulbright Foundation Scholarship program. To qualify, for the scholarship, a student must claim foreign citizenship. This document would seem to provide the smoking gun that many of Obama's detractors have been seeking.

The news has created a firestorm at the White House as the release casts increasing doubt about Obama's legitimacy and qualification to serve as president. When reached for comment in London, where he has been in meetings with British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, Obama smiled but refused comment on the issue. Meanwhile, White House press secretary Robert Gibbs scoffed at the report stating that this was obviously another attempt by a right-wing conservative group to discredit the president and undermine the administration's efforts to move the country in a new direction.

Britain's Daily Mail has also carried the story in a front-page article titled, "Obama Eligibility Questioned", leading some to speculate that the story may overshadow economic issues on Obama's first official visit to the U.K.

In a related matter, under growing pressure from several groups, Justice Antonin Scalia announced that the Supreme Court agreed on Tuesday to hear arguments concerning Obama's legal eligibility to serve as President in a case brought by Leo Donofrio of New Jersey. This lawsuit claims Obama's dual citizenship disqualified him from serving as president. Donofrio's case is just one of 18 suits brought by citizens demanding proof of Obama's citizenship or qualification to serve as president.

Gary Kreep of the United States Justice Foundation has released the results of their investigation of Obama's campaign spending. This study estimates that Obama has spent upwards of $950,000 in campaign funds in the past year with eleven law firms in 12 states for legal resources to block disclosure of any of his personal records. Mr. Kreep indicated that the investigation is still ongoing but that the final report will be provided to the U.S. attorney general, Eric Holder. Mr. Holder has refused to comment on the matter.

According to Associated Press story shown below, Obama's tramscripts from Occidential College show that he was an undergradraduate at the school under the name Barry Soetoro, and received financial aid as a foreign student from Indonesia. I did a search using "Smoking gun finally found."

This story from Le Journal de Montréal is en français, but you don't have to know the lingo of the Continent to figure out the meaning of le mot "incontinent":

Des patients souffrant d'un problème d'incontinence grave doivent attendre jusqu'à trois ans pour une opération qui dure à peine 30 minutes.

Which means: In the Province of Quebec, patients suffering from serious incontinence — ie, they have to aller aux toilettes jusqu'à 12 fois par nuit (that's 12 times a night) — have to wait three years for a half-hour operation. That's 3 years times 365 nights times 12 trips to the bathroom.

There are only two urologists in the province who perform the operation, in part because hospital budgets are so tight they decline to buy the necessary "neurostimulator."

The central point about socialized medicine is that restricting access is the only means of controlling costs. And, when comparisons of health "costs" between nations are made, the time you spend in the bathroom each night and the subsequent impact on your work performance the following day are not factored in.

Of course, if you get sick of the three-year wait, you can always drive a couple of hours south, with frequent rest stops, to Fletcher Allen Hospital in Vermont or Dartmouth-Hitchcock in New Hampshire, and write a check. For the moment. Once the U.S. system has been "reformed" so that its wait lists are up to Euro-Canadian standards, poor incontinent Quebeckers will have to drive to Costa Rica. And that's a lot more rest stops.

He is in good company.
Tens of millions of Americans do not like Barack Obama.
The very kindest and most gentle thing
I can say about Barack Obama
is that I do not like him.
I do not like him in the same way a cancer patient
does not like his cancer.

Hillyer complains about the Orwellian nature
of the Obama regime.
Obama says one thing, does another, denies he said it and then denies he did it. All of this mendacity and obfuscation resides in Obama as deeply as anything can. It is as much a part of him as his teeth. One odd fact about Obama—there are many odd facts about Obama—is that his most rabid supporters know he lies and do not mind at all that he lies. One must delve rather deeply into the realms of psychology to understand such folks. One is reminded of the woman who is regularly beaten by her boyfriend but refuses to press charges against him. She loves him, you see.

And that sort of “love” is unworthy of a people whose heritage is the Declaration, the Constitution and the Republic created by them. Simply stated, when such folks control the destiny of a nation, that nation will ooze into dictatorship. Imagine if these sorts were in the majority around the time of Lexington and Concord. There would have been no “shot heard ‘round the world.” All would have ended with a whimper and a very sincere plea that King George send aid, comfort and sustenance to his beloved colonies and subjects.

It was a very good thing for the history of liberty in our fallen world that such folks were nowhere to be found when Washington, Jefferson, Madison and their type walked our land. Now they are everywhere, like flies buzzing around rotten flesh. They are as the worthless plebeians in the late Roman Republic and all through the history of the Empire who were fed panem et circenses and were pleased and contended therefore. Juvenal wrote of the Obama types of his day:

… Already long ago, from when we sold our vote to no man, the People have abdicated our duties; for the People who once upon a time handed out military command, high civil office, legions — everything, now restrains itself and anxiously hopes for just two things: bread and circuses.

Such folks were not considered worthy of service in the legions, naturally. Who in his right mind would trust the maintenance of the State to such flotsam? Certainly no Roman emperor or senator thought to do so. These sorts of plebs were good only to clap and yelp when the emperor made an appearance at the games. You can see their modern descendants at official Obama rallies and among the shock troops of ACORN.

Aristotle had their number 2300 years ago. He wrote that some people were simply “natural slaves” and thus were unsuited to the demands of self-rule. Aristotle knew that no democracy could possibly survive when such men were in the majority, though he predicted that sooner or later the very nature of a free state would allow these sorts to rise to the top and eventually control the levers of power. When that happened, the game was up. That State would morph into tyranny.

We hear a modern echo of Aristotle in Heinlein.

The human race divides politically into those who want people to be controlled and those who have no such desire.

We saw these types at Katrina as they begged the government to “do something” even as it herded them cattle-like into an arena. We saw these types as they begged the government to protect their mortgages. We see these types today as they bow and beg and scrape at the feet of Obama, pleading with him to grant them health care, college education, housing and funds from the treasury. They are just as Aristotle predicted, fit only to serve and be fed.

Needless to say these types have no interest in the form of government under which they live. Their only concern is the maintenance of their fleshly desires. And the odd thing is that even if the State fails to supply them, they still grant it their support. Recall the oft-beaten girlfriend.

Truly, Obama love is a many-splendored thing.

One can search the pages of the history of dictatorships and quickly discover that natural slaves are unable and unwilling to overthrow any tyrant. Indeed, they would quake and quiver at the mere suggestion of such a thing. Dostoyevsky was right, that “one need only show a whip to a beaten dog.” I would add that one need only shake a food bowl at a pampered lapdog.

What to do with these sorts? Indeed, what can be done with them? Every free man must shudder when these folks head for the voting booths with their Obama buttons proudly affixed. Even if Obama is booted out of office in 2012 his creatures will still be among us, wandering zombie-like and bemoaning the loss of their hero and sustainer. They would certainly be more than willing to follow the next demagogue to arise among us. One can even argue that these unworthies will become the king makers in any political contest as all candidates strive to outdo each other in promising our rabble “this, that and the other.”

It is exactly this type of thing that has led the Republican Party—what is left of it anyway—to begin to transform itself into nothing so complex as a mirror image of the Democrat Party. Whatever programs the Democrats vow to support the Republicans vow to support as well, with perhaps a little less spending. The absurdity is apparent. What parasite will accept a lessening of his food ration? These folks will vote for the men who will best care for them.

For they hear their Master’s voice, and will follow. Even into Hell if need be.

which in certain precincts is still a more grievous crime than stealing.

Mr. Edwards,
the one-time governor of the "gret stet of Louisiana," famously boasted
that he would never be brought down
"unless they catch me in bed with a dead girl or a live boy." That was before the feds brought him down
for a crime involving only a bag of cash.
Louisiana is notoriously forgiving of its politicians,
in part because voters there have had a lot of practice,
and in part because fun on the bayou,
naughty and not, is fun:
"Laissez le bon temps rouler." Let the good times roll.
If the Edwards formula once worked in New Orleans,
you might think it would work in Nevada,
since Las Vegas is not necessarily where you should start the search if you're looking for a moral value.

More recently a junior senator from Louisiana was the object of considerable sport in his home state after his name appeared in a Washington madam's little black book. He was censured not so much for betraying his wife but that with all the talent available on Capitol Hill the senator had employed the services of a madam. Other members of Congress rarely look beyond their office suites for forbidden sweets; why should their senator be so backward in the pursuit of amours? He made the home folks look bad.

Mr. Ensign's misfortune inevitably becomes grist for the capital's gossip mills and Washington jokesmiths, such as they are. The correspondents, columnists and the freelance pundits of the blogosphere are of course shocked - shocked! - that Mr. Ensign, who scolded Bill Clinton for running a crib off the Oval Office and Sen. Larry Craig for his men's room ablutions, should have so easily succumbed to the temptations of feminine favors to which he was not entitled, either by law or moral custom. This was proof of hypocrisy, the highest crime and the most evil misdemeanor that a Washington journalist, being the closest approximation we have to a figure of perfect character and unsullied virtue, can imagine.

Washington journalists love nothing better than a scandal with a whiff of the boudoir (even if the boudoir is a men's room at the Minneapolis-St. Paul airport), and most of them grade on a steep curve of moral equivalence. Not everybody is an expert on politics, but everybody is an authority, if not necessarily an expert, on matters of sex.

Congressional Democrats are more likely to grant a pass for naughty conduct than Republicans. This is not necessarily driven by political ideology. Republicans are no less likely to fall to temptation, but are more likely to understand that hypocrisy is the tribute that vice pays to virtue. Republicans generally pay a dearer price to their constituents. Newt Gingrich of Georgia and Robert Livingston of Louisiana each had to give up the position of Speaker of the House when caught in embarrassing indiscretions. When Rep. Barney Frank got caught allowing his live-in male lover to run a whorehouse in their apartment, the House censured him (though calling it a "reprimand") and his constituents in starchy Massachusetts continued to return him to Washington by wide margins.

There's nothing particularly sordid in the Ensign affair. His friendship with an employee in his office developed into something more intimate while he was separated from his wife. He described what he had done, at greater length than he need have. He stood up like a man in the way that other congressional miscreants before him did not do. He did it alone; the usual congressional perp walk includes the offended wife, who tries to put a smile on a teary face and pretend eagerness to get on with a life with the man who done her wrong.

This has become an honored Washington ritual, like the grim procession to the Tyburn gallows in 17th century London, with townspeople taunting the condemned on his way to the torture of the damned. The irony is that we should expect anything better from "our only native criminal class," as Mark Twain described Congress. But Congress, after all, is only a reflection of a culture saturated by deception, knavery and violence. The popular entertainment is a catalog of sexual guile. Anything goes. A popular comedian makes a joke about the rape of a child and the national argument is not about who should horsewhip the comedian, but about whether he owed anyone an apology. We all live in Las Vegas now. Uh, not that there's anything wrong with that.

THE MULLAHS WHO GUIDE THE HAND OF AHMADINEJAD HAVE MADE IT CLEAR THAT THEY HAVE AN AGENDA AND INTEND TO ENFORCE IT WITH THE CLENCHED FIST

Silver linings are deceptive and often hard to find,
but that might be a tiny sliver of silver
in that dark cloudbank over Iran.
Barack Obama got notice from the election results
that his tongue, golden and honeyed though it may be,
is no match for reality.

If Iranian voters had thrown Mahmoud Ahmadinejad into the street,
the American president would have assumed
that he was the One who did it,
and the American press would have led the hosannas
for the messiah from the south side of Chicago.
Just a few more speeches,
a few more respectful bows toward Mecca,
and all the rough places would be made smooth and plain.
But now even Mr. Obama must wake up and smell the tear gas.

The prospect that a victory by the Iranian moderates would cure what's wrong in the Middle East was a hookah dream from the start, a tale of the Arabian night indulged by those unable to bear the sight, sound and responsibility posed by reality. Iran is not ruled by Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, but by the head ayatollah, the Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, and his pigsty of brutal mullahs. Mr. Ahmadinejad never misses an opportunity to pay craven tribute to these unelected agents of harsh Islamic rule, always with a bending of the knee and a kiss for every outstretched holy hand.

Mir Hossein Mousavi, the current object of Western desire, put up the brave fight and now puts up a brave loser's front, stiff upper lip and all that. But he's under virtual house arrest as thousands of his supporters continue to throng the streets, screaming and vowing never to recognize a suspect verdict. He was reduced Monday to begging the mullahs to issue a fatwa decreeing that Mr. Ahmadinejad is not really the president, and asking the chief ayatollah to change his mind. He wants the government to dismiss the results and call a new election. All that, and a lollipop, too.

The election results, together with the high probability that the result was tinkered with if not rigged, and the cops and troops controlling the streets with clubs and tear gas suggest that, surprise, surprise, Mr. Ahmadinejad is getting away with it. From the capitals of the West, there was mostly spluttering and whining. The French foreign minister said the treatment of the demonstrators was "somewhat brutal," the operative word apparently the "somewhat," and the German government said the Tehran reaction was "unacceptable," which is diplo-speak for, "is there any more tea?"

There was all but silence from the White House, where Mr. Obama said he was pleased with the "robust debate" in Iran, proving only that he's easily pleased and eager to get back to what he does best, wrapping appeasement of the enemy in the sticky warmth of mere words. The "robust debate" Mr. Obama admired featured the opposition candidate smeared as both inspired by Hitler and a creature of the Jews, with skeptical newspapers shut down and Internet sites closed. Foreign observers were forbidden to watch and listen to the "robust debate." Given that nobody voted secretly - voters are easily identified and the naughty ones often punished - the 33 percent who voted for the opposition were brave, indeed.

Joe Biden, our long-missing veep, complains that "we just don't know enough," which is business as usual for good ol' Joe. (Nobody ever tells him anything.) "Is this the result of the Iranian people's wishes?" he asks. "The hope is that the Iranian people, all their votes have been counted, they've been counted fairly." Well, yes, we can all hope that.

But Mr. Obama will have to do better than admire "robust debate" and hope that once the evildoers hear the sound of his voice they will straighten up and fly right. Iranians, like everybody else, have a right to elect whomever they want, and even to steal elections without outside interference. The reality that President Obama must deal with goes beyond whether the election was free and fair. The mullahs who guide the hand of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad have made it abundantly clear that they have an agenda, and intend to enforce it with the clenched fist Mr. Obama imagines he can unclench with a teleprompter.

Some people in the West - particularly in Washington - are tempted to dismiss the Iranian president as a clown and a fool, given to writing checks ("Israel must be wiped off the map") he could never cash. But these skeptics are the fools. President Obama must now rise to the occasion to deal with Iran as it is, and not as he wishes it to be. This is the job he said he wanted.

WASHINGTON D.C., April 1, 2009: In a move certain to fuel the debate over Obama's qualifications for the presidency, the group "Americans for Freedom of Information" has released copies of President Obama's college transcripts from Occidental College. Released today, the transcript indicates that Obama, under the name Barry Soetoro, received financial aid as a foreign student from Indonesia as an undergraduate at the school. The transcript was released by Occidental College in compliance with a court order in a suit brought by the group in the Superior Court of California. The transcript shows that Obama (Soetoro) applied for financial aid and was awarded a fellowship for foreign students from the Fulbright Foundation Scholarship program. To qualify, for the scholarship, a student must claim foreign citizenship. This document would seem to provide the smoking gun that many of Obama's detractors have been seeking.

The news has created a firestorm at the White House as the release casts increasing doubt about Obama's legitimacy and qualification to serve as president. When reached for comment in London, where he has been in meetings with British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, Obama smiled but refused comment on the issue. Meanwhile, White House press secretary Robert Gibbs scoffed at the report stating that this was obviously another attempt by a right-wing conservative group to discredit the president and undermine the administration's efforts to move the country in a new direction.

Britain's Daily Mail has also carried the story in a front-page article titled, "Obama Eligibility Questioned", leading some to speculate that the story may overshadow economic issues on Obama's first official visit to the U.K.

In a related matter, under growing pressure from several groups, Justice Antonin Scalia announced that the Supreme Court agreed on Tuesday to hear arguments concerning Obama's legal eligibility to serve as President in a case brought by Leo Donofrio of New Jersey. This lawsuit claims Obama's dual citizenship disqualified him from serving as president. Donofrio's case is just one of 18 suits brought by citizens demanding proof of Obama's citizenship or qualification to serve as president.

Gary Kreep of the United States Justice Foundation has released the results of their investigation of Obama's campaign spending. This study estimates that Obama has spent upwards of $950,000 in campaign funds in the past year with eleven law firms in 12 states for legal resources to block disclosure of any of his personal records. Mr. Kreep indicated that the investigation is still ongoing but that the final report will be provided to the U.S. attorney general, Eric Holder. Mr. Holder has refused to comment on the matter.

According to Associated Press story shown below, Obama's tramscripts from Occidential College show that he was an undergradraduate at the school under the name Barry Soetoro, and received financial aid as a foreign student from Indonesia. I did a search using "Smoking gun finally found."

IT IS GOVERNMENT'S ROLE TO GO AROUND STIRRING UP APATHY AMONG THE GENERAL POPULATION, THAT WAY EVERYONE GIVES UP AND THE OLIGARCHY DOES ITS THING

ONCE BIG GOVERNMENT IS IN PLACE IT IS HARD TO GO BACK

Willie Whitelaw, a genial old buffer

who served as Margaret Thatcher's deputy for many years,

once accused the Labour Party of going around Britain stirring up apathy.

Viscount Whitelaw's apparent paradox is,

in fact, a shrewd political insight,

and all the sharper for being accidental.

Big government depends, in large part,

in going around the country stirring up apathy –

creating the sense that problems are so big, so complex, so intractable

that even attempting to think about them for yourself

gives you such a splitting headache it's easier to shrug and accept as given

the proposition that only government can deal with them.

Take health care.

Have you read any of these health care plans?

Of course not. They're huge and turgid and unreadable.

Unless you're a health care lobbyist, a health care think-tanker, a health care correspondent or some other fellow who's paid directly or indirectly to plow through this stuff, why bother?

None of the senators whose names are on the bills have read 'em; why should you?

And you can understand why they drag on a bit. If you attempt to devise a health care "plan" for 300 million people, it's bound to get a bit complicated. But a health care plan for you, Joe Schmoe of 27 Elm Street, didn't used to be that complicated, did it? Let's say you carelessly drop Ted Kennedy's health care plan on your foot, and it breaks your toe. In the old days, you'd go to your doctor (or, indeed, believe it or not, have him come to you), he'd patch you up, and you'd write him a check. That's the way it was in most of the developed world within living memory. Now, under the guise of "insurance," various third parties intercede between the doctor and your checkbook, and to this the government proposes adding a massive federal bureaucracy, in the interests of "controlling costs." The British National Health Service is the biggest employer not just in the United Kingdom but in the whole of Europe. Care to estimate the size and budget of a U.S. health bureaucracy?

According to the U.N. figures, life expectancy in the United States is 78 years; in the United Kingdom, it's 79 – yay, go socialized health care! On the other hand, in Albania, where the entire population chain-smokes, and the health care system involves swimming to Italy, life expectancy is still 71 years – or about where America was a generation or so back. Once you get childhood mortality under control and observe basic hygiene and lifestyle precautions, the health "system" is relatively marginal. One notes that, even in Somalia, which still has high childhood mortality, not to mention a state of permanent civil war, functioning government has entirely collapsed and yet life expectancy has increased from 49 to 55. Maybe if government were to collapse entirely in Washington, our life expectancy would show equally remarkable gains. Just thinking outside the box here.

When President Barack Obama tells you he's "reforming" health care to "control costs," the point to remember is that the only way to "control costs" in health care is to have less of it. In a government system, the doctor, the nurse, the janitor and the Assistant Deputy Associate Director of Cost-Control System Management all have to be paid every Friday, so the sole means of "controlling costs" is to restrict the patient's access to treatment. In the Province of Quebec, patients with severe incontinence – i.e., they're in the bathroom 12 times a night – wait three years for a simple 30-minute procedure. True, Quebeckers have a year or two on Americans in the life expectancy hit parade, but, if you're making 12 trips a night to the john 365 times a year for three years, in terms of life-spent-outside-the-bathroom expectancy, an uninsured Vermonter may actually come out ahead.

As Louis XV is said to have predicted, "Après moi, le deluge" – which seems as incisive an observation as any on a world in which freeborn citizens of the wealthiest societies in human history are content to rise from their beds every half-hour every night and traipse to the toilet for yet another flush simply because a government bureaucracy orders them to do so. "Health" is potentially a big-ticket item, but so's a house and a car, and most folks manage to handle those without a Government Accommodation Plan or a Government Motor Vehicles System – or, at any rate, they did in pre-bailout America.

More importantly, there is a cost to governmentalizing every responsibility of adulthood – and it is, in Lord Whitelaw's phrase, the stirring up of apathy. If you wander 'round Liverpool or Antwerp, Hamburg or Lyons, the fatalism is palpable. In Britain, once the crucible of freedom, civic life is all but dead: In Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland, some three-quarters of the economy is government spending; a malign alliance between state bureaucrats and state dependents has corroded democracy, perhaps irreparably. In England, the ground ceded to the worst sociopathic pathologies advances every day – and the latest report on "the seven evils" afflicting an ever more unlovely land blames "poverty" and "individualism," failing to understand that if you remove the burdens of individual responsibility while loosening all restraint on individual hedonism the vaporization of the public space is all but inevitable. In Ontario, Christine Elliott, a candidate for the leadership of the so-called "Conservative" party, is praised by the media for offering a more emollient conservatism predicated on "the need to take care of vulnerable people."

Look, by historical standards, we're loaded: We have TVs and iPods and machines to wash our clothes and our dishes. We're the first society in which a symptom of poverty is obesity: Every man his own William Howard Taft. Of course we're "vulnerable": By definition, we always are. But to demand a government organized on the principle of preemptively "taking care" of potential "vulnerabilities" is to make all of us, in the long run, far more vulnerable. A society of children cannot survive, no matter how all-embracing the government nanny.

I get a lot of mail each week arguing that, when folks see the price tag attached to Obama's plans, they'll get angry. Maybe. But, if Europe's a guide, at least as many people will retreat into apathy. Once big government's in place, it's very hard to go back.

The military is not to be used for “nation building”

or bringing your enemy to the conference table

or “sending a signal” or gradual escalation.

It is to be used to destroy forever and evermore the enemies of your nation.

Period.

Take a lesson from Rome.

known as the Pax Romana.

Never before and never since has the world seen such a long period of peace and stability.

It happened because of the Roman legions,

the finest and most lethal military ever seen outside of our own.

It's enough to make a body cry,
or at least laugh,
except in Austria,
which is seriously bracing for the opening of Sacha Baron Cohen's
latest summer prank, a movie called "Bruno."
Austria is the land of the waltz, the Sacher torte
and a certain pioneer in ethnic cleansing,
and Baron Cohen's new movie is a tribute,
if anyone wants to call it that,
to the original fatherland.
But satire is an acquired taste that the Austrians have not yet acquired.

"Bruno" is an over-the-top gay fashionista who dreams of being the most famous Austrian since Hitler, and yearns "to live the Austrian dream of finding a partner, buying a dungeon and starting a family." Baron Cohen's first movie, "Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefits Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan" did for Kazakhstan what Bill Clinton did for Arkansas, and now the baron is doing it all over Austria. (There's even a cameo role for Arkansas.)

One of our own barons - Rep. Barney Frank, a baron of the House of Representatives - indulged in a little theater himself this week. When he didn't like the way the questions were asked, he got in a catfight with a television interviewer over the Obama administration's hectoring of private companies to limit the pay of their executives. So he did his Dan Rather impersonation and rudely walked off the set in mid-question.

For now the Democrats say they only want to limit how publicly traded companies can pay their executives, but anyone who has been in Washington for more than a fortnight knows what's coming next. Wall Street today, Main Street tomorrow. The president knows better than to waste a crisis.

But Barney assured witnesses at a congressional hearing that "we're not talking here about the amount. We are talking here about the structure of compensation. And I believe the structure of compensation has been flawed." Not as flawed as the way congressmen structure their own pay, of course, with automatic raises and a flood of hidden perks, but you could ask Barney or any other congressman and he would tell you, "Well, that's different."

Gene Sperling, an aide to Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner, said pshaw, nobody's about to tell corporations how to make out the payroll. "I can say with a certainty that nobody in the Obama administration is proposing such a thing," he told a House committee Thursday. But - and there's always the "but" - he was willing to lay out a case for how companies could contribute to financial crisis if they are not closely supervised by strict nannies armed with the weapons of government.

Bill Clinton, for his part, continues to demonstrate that good times are never forever. This could be an object lesson for gloomy Republicans who imagine that Barack Obama is the agent of doom that lies just around the corner. Only yesterday the Boy President's magic worked everywhere. He went into Virginia this spring to campaign for Terry McAuliffe, the bag man for the campaigns of both Hil and Bill who aspired to be the governor of Virginia. When the public-opinion polls throughout winter and spring showed Gov. Terry McAuliffe to be as inevitable as President Hillary Clinton, Bill figured it was safe to campaign for him. Bill was so confident of his mojo, in fact, that he hit the stump for another paltrying only for the state legislature. He ran a dismal third, demonstrating, perhaps, that ex-presidents just ain't what they used to be.

The skies all over America seemed littered with little clouds no bigger than a ladylike fist, if an observant Democrat took the trouble to look. Clouds can blow away as quickly as they arrive, but sometimes they come with rain and flood. If nothing else, they're witness to the iron law of life, that summer, winter or fall, nothing recedes like success.
