........................
Calling a spade a spade has been an essential element of political campaigns from the birth of our Nation to the present time. Some faint-hearted people are, or pretend to be, shocked by some of the things being said in the current presidential campaign.
Actually we have not heard anything that can compare with some of the famous quotations from political campaigns of past years.
I am reminded of one quotation which appeared in John Fitzgerald Kennedy's book, Profiles in Courage. Writing about the senatorial campaign which took place in Texas shortly after the Republic of Texas was admitted to membership in the United States, Kennedy quoted the 'George Washington' of Texas, Sam Houston, as saying of his opponent in the senatorial race:
"My opponent has all the qualities of a dog, except loyalty!"
