Father Richard P. McBrien

By now all sentient beings
know that today [Sunday] is Obama’s commencement address
at Notre Dame
and his acceptance of an honorary doctorate of law.
If you need to be brought up to date about this outrage
and why it is occurring at Notre Dame
you might read this.
As is usual for things involving Obama
there is shame,
and mendacity all around.

Notre Dame—the name means “Our Lady,” as in Mary the Mother of God—
has a reputation as the preeminent Catholic university in America.
This reputation is false,
as the theology taught there has long been heretical if not blasphemous.
It is scarcely Christian, let alone Catholic.
Consider these beliefs of Father Richard Peter McBrien,
the Crowley-O’Brien Professor of Theology at Notre Dame.

He does not believe in the devil. He compared John Paul II to Communist dictators. He was a consultant to both ABC and The Da Vinci Code. He is more than likely pro-abortion. He counts as possible that Jesus was married.

Here are some views of Jesuit theologian Michael J. Himes who was once part of the theology department at Notre Dame.

God does not care if you are wicked or unjust. Jesus does not tell his disciples to love God. God is not a person or a being who has a plan for us.

The teachings of both McBrien and Himes are nothing but a refined paganism well suited to the age in which we live—an age of disintegration, of deterioration, of depravity, of Obama.

This collapse of Catholic teaching at Notre Dame coincided with the collapse of Catholic culture in the United States over the past 50 years. The results have been “Catholic” legislators who publically support abortion, the fact that Obama got 54 percent of the Catholic vote, the grotesque placing of open homosexuals in the priesthood—who then did what homosexuals always do, molest adolescent males—and the scandal this caused when these sodomite priests were moved from parish to parish even after they ruined countless lives through their perversions.

And it has not been just Notre Dame that has abandoned all Catholic Doctrine and Morals. Georgetown has as well. Indeed, it would be hard to find a true Catholic university in this nation outside of a few small liberal arts colleges.

Obama quite naturally is at home giving an address at such places and receiving adulations and awards from them. They are in perfect harmony with his own views of God and His Church.

But there is more. The presence of Obama at Notre Dame reveals his naked contempt for Catholic Doctrine and Morals. Obama will be planting the flag of radical abortion in a university that carries the name of the mother of Christ. When he mounts that podium he will in fact be spitting into the face of the Virgin Mary. This should not surprise anyone, as he has spent all his adult years spitting into the face of her Son.

Someone should tell the fool that God will not long be mocked.

Update: The next president of the United States takes a stand. She has more guts than any of the weaklings who run the Republican Party. Where are they anyway? I have heard nothing from these squishes for some time.

My favorite grandpa, Clem James Sheeran, was Catholic. Irish to the core, his favorite place (other than church) was Notre Dame. I can’t imagine what he would think as the university recognizes someone who contradicts the core values of the Catholic faith by promoting an anti-life agenda. As we learned today, our nation is more pro-life than ever before; it is a very important time to strengthen the message that every baby is created for good purpose and has the potential to make this world a better place.

So let’s see: Pro-life, anti-sodomite marriage, Christian, conservative, gun nut, great looking. Works for me.

Update: Thomas Babington Macaulay had much to say about the Catholic Church. An agnostic himself, he still had eyes wide open enough to see the obvious—that there “is no subject more worthy of study than the Roman Catholic Church.”

The history of that Church joins together the two great ages of human civilization. No other institution is left standing which carries the mind back to the times when the smoke of sacrifice rose from the Pantheon…. The proudest royal houses are but of yesterday, when compared with the line of the Supreme Pontiffs.

To read Macaulay is to recognize at once how far the Catholic Church has fallen, and fallen at all points and everywhere—in status, influence, obedience. It is also to see how worthless are the men—all those fancy Jesuits and theologians whose claims to fame seldom rise above heresy, arrogance and deceit—entrusted by the Church to spread her Doctrines and teach her flock.

Such men are traitors to the Church they absurdly claim to obey and the God they mendaciously claim to serve.

Francis W. Porretto // May 17, 2009 at 1:41 pm

God is never mocked. He “sees the truth, but waits.”

I forget who, but some very wise man once wrote that every action contains its consequences. Once the action has been performed, the consequences become inevitable, If it were not so, we could not speak of any such thing as laws of nature.

Thus it is also with Notre Dame and Barack Hussein Obama. This isn’t the same as allowing that other faiths have some piece of the truth. Nor is it the same as voting “present” on some contentious issue so as to avoid angering a special-interest group. This is the embrace of evil, by persons who’ve been schooled in the nature thereof. This is the victory march of an occupying power, mistakenly secure in his victory.

This is what the Greeks had in mind when they told us that hubris is always followed by Nemesis.

No, God is not mocked. They have sown the wind; they will reap the whirlwind.

Scipio // May 18, 2009

Dear Francis:

“The embrace of evil” is something that this administration does daily, hourly, and with unmitigated glee. It simply revels in those habits that God calls abominations.

An apt phrase, “a victory march of an occupying power.” An “occupying power” rather nicely sums up what this regime is.

When Nemesis comes I hope and pray that she is particular in whom she destroys and brings down to the abyss. I would rather the entire nation did not have to pay for the delusions of one party.

I wonder at times what exactly goes through the mind of Obama. Does he ever think of God? Does he ever think of what will happen a moment after his own death?

Joan of Argghh! // May 17, 2009 at 1:49 pm

My brother is a priest, educated in Chicago’s theological enclaves. He totally loves Obama. I believe and hope that he loves God more, however.

Scipio // May 18, 2009

Dear Joan:

This very issue came up a few days ago. I found out that the family of one of my students supported Obama. They had always considered themselves Christian. I simply cannot get my mind to accept how folks who call themselves Christian could support Obama. It is not just over abortion, but that alone is a sufficient cause to reject Obama and all his pomp.

I am almost certain that at least one of the priests at a Church that I attend from time to time supported Obama. I would never ask him, but his liberal views on so many things have fairly driven me from that Church. Mass is where I go to worship God and partake of the Eucharist, not to hear Democrat propaganda from the pulpit.

Joan, how does your brother square his support of Obama with his Catholic faith? Can one love God but not obey Him? Please understand that I am condemning no one. It is that this phenomenon of Catholics supporting Obama cries out for an explanation, however painful that might be for Catholics to hear.

Francis was as usual spot on with that comment. When a man obviously embraces evil how can he maintain any belief in God? It seems to be an absolute rejection of God. That man is a rebel, like that first rebel, Lucifer. He must lay down his arms.

Geoffrey de Bouillon // May 17, 2009 at 3:25 pm

KG’s comment from yesterday might be instructive. “Perhaps a more frightening thought is that when the Antichrist appears an adoring public won’t care about the deceits and betrayals because they no longer regard those things as repugnant–thus demonstrating their readiness to embrace him.” The genuine article, or only the the valet, God is not mocked.

2 Timothy 3:1-5. Especially verse 5 for Notre Dame.

This piece: also gives a good account. The Holy Spirit is prompting people to sort themselves out. Or is this what separating the sheep from the goats looks like?

Scipio // May 18, 2009

Dear Geoffrey:

For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good, traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having a form of godliness but denying its power.

That rather well sums up these modern days.

Sheep and goats; wheat and tares. Your insight is spot on. Things are being sorted out.

Gagdad Bob // May 17, 2009 at 3:44 pm

If Jesus were here, he’d clear out the auditorium with a bullwhip. But Notre Dame security would shoot him before he could get in.

Scipio // May 18, 2009

Dear Gagdad Bob:

When Jesus returns, those folks at Notre Dame will have more pressing things on their minds than somebody crashing their auditorium. They will go to their knees, not in joy but in terror.

el camino // May 17, 2009 at 9:02 pm

Did you object as violently when the pro-death-penalty George W. Bush, the same one who mocked those seeking clemency when he was governor of Texas, gave a commencement address at Notre Dame? I believe that is also contrary to the Catholic Church’s teachings, for much the same reason. Or do you only adhere to these teachings when it suits your partisan purposes?

Scipio // May 18, 2009 at 1:40 am

Dear el camino:

The death penalty is not and never has been “contrary to Catholic teachings.” Neither are the arguments in favor of capital punishment at all similar to the Church’s condemnation of abortion. Please get your facts right before you comment here.

mts1 // May 17, 2009 at 9:25 pm

I’m close to this. I tried to drive there this morning, but a damaged hip socket turned me back just east of Michigan City - details unnecessary, but if I can’t walk right, I can’t be much help at the protest.

No one has correctly explained what Notre Dame is, but let me try. In the Chicago area, there were what were called “subway alumni,” working class Catholic immigrants who were rabid Notre Dame boosters though they never attended or could hope to attend, simply because Notre Dame was the American Catholic Immigrant Experience (the subway part is from them riding the South Shore interurban from Chicago and Northwest Indiana to Notre Dame to see the sporting events). It was the flesh and blood, brick and mortar reality of their making it, their becoming fully as American as Apple Pie and the WASPS. Bing Crosby’s movie Going My Way in real life. Alumni aren’t the only source of support - I can only wonder how many working stiffs made contributions made contributions while Notre Dame was working its way towards educational greatness as it was becoming a powerhouse on the football field.

Now if this “win one for the Gipper” ole Irish brogue speaking parish priest sentimentality better fits a 1955 Notre Dame than a 2009 one is moot. The hallowed image is what makes it a touchstone of millions. NBC signed an exclusive contract for all football games because of its image (an in spite of its mediocre football winning record for the past two decades). The movie “Rudy” could not have been made at any other university. They get bowl appearances and tournament brackets they sometimes might not deserve because they are a beloved institution with a fan base of millions whose presence makes the NCAA money. I know scores of other Catholic universities were fool enough to honor other rabid abortion enthusiasts. But one can’t fight all battles, and the reason this one touched a chord is that it involved the Abortion Enthusiast in Chief receiving a most famous honor at the Catholic university most cherished and beloved by American Catholics. The most emphatic thumb in the eye.

Scipio // May 18, 2009

Dear mts1:

Thank you kindly for that insight and history into Notre Dame and its supporters. It cleared some things up for me.

A “thumb in the eye” indeed. Or perhaps the middle finger directed toward God and His mother.

The pain in your hour hip socket does not sound very pleasant! I will pray that the thing heals.

svgjjc // May 17, 2009 at 11:28 pm

So troubling Scipio. Obama has succeeded to further intellectualize and abstract abortion, which serves only the evil he so eloquently fosters. I’ve a perspective on abortion that I wish more could share. It is a perspective of twenty three weeks.

My wife works as a nurse in special care nurseries. Tiny lives are brought there, fighting for life. Born as early as 23 weeks, they would easily fit into the palm of your hand. The compassion, skills, technology, brilliance, and experience of the teams amassed to save them, remind me continually of the miracles possible in a nation under God. These amazing stories of life and hope will never find their way into a “new spirit of national debate on abortion”.

Alive in the world at twenty three weeks - fragile and helpless but every bit a human being as all of us. Light, touch, and merely breathing bring pain to these tiny souls - suffered simply from being outside their mother’s womb before their time. It can be severe enough for a morphine drip. Managing their pain and trauma requires heart and vigilance. So how deafening the must silent screams be as tiny limbs are crushed, twisted and pulled off by the cold steel of the abortionist’s tools?

A twenty three week baby or, second trimester abortion. How great a progressive intellect does it take to rationalize the difference?

Scipio // May 18, 2009

Dear svgjjc:

Your wife’s story wrenches the soul. A man who could wreak violence and destruction upon those little beings are the damned of this world and of the next.

Obama and his party are in love with death, death in all its myriad forms. Euthanasia, sodomy, abortion, contraception—anything that diminishes and annihilates humanity is seen as good. It is as Pope John Paul II said, a “culture of death.” Those who support such an ideology are dead themselves.

Boots // May 18, 2009 at 12:41 am

Chicago media are of course covering this controversy in a pro-Obama way, including finding some local priests who are friends of Obama’s,CST-NWS-priests16.article

From the article, it appears that Obama’s desire to remake America into a socialist collective has led the priests to overlook the Church’s teaching on when life begins.

The Church hierarchy really does not “get it”. The faithful have suffered through decades of the abuse of their children by priests, aided and abbetted by the highest levels of church leadership. Now the church is prepared to abandon its commitment to life, in order to look cool to the other lefties?

Scipio // May 18, 2009

Dear Boots:

Those priests are fools. The Carpenter warned us about such creatures 2000 years ago. Even as presented in that pro-Obama article, their opinions are both laughable and disgraceful. With priests like those in the article it is no wonder that the Church has lost millions of adherents.

So, “why be Catholic?” Because it is the Church founded by Jesus Himself. Because its Doctrines and Morals were given to her directly by the Carpenter. Because she nourished and collected all the writings that eventually became the Bible. God Himself said that the gates of Hell would not prevail against her. She cannot be judged by the quality of her members, all of whom are sinners, some grievously so.

The American Catholic Church has been in schism for decades. Weak, vacillating and corrupt priests and bishops had made it so. But they cannot at all affect the truth of her teachings. To abandon Catholicism is to abandon Reason itself.
Why be a Catholic?

Jaye // May 18, 2009 at 1:39 am

Why not do something in reparation for the insult. I just enrolled and will make the consecration to Our Lady on May 3st with the Militia of the Immaculata.

There is also the Rosary Confraternity.

Scipio // May 18, 2009

Dear Jaye:

Thank you kindly for the inspiration. You are right that something must be done in response to the insult. I must say that I pray for the leaders of this nation, but my prayers are forced and insincere and I do it only because I am under authority to do it. Not the best attitude, but that is all I can manage right now.

Barry Soetoro aka Barack Hussein Obama
is a
because he is not eligible to be President of the United States
because he is not a Natural Born Citizen
as required by Article Two, Section One, Clause Five
of the United States Constitution.
This is a fact regardless of
where he was born (Mombassa, Hawaii, Chicago, Mecca or Mars).

He is not a Natural Born Citizen
because he was not born of
at the time of his birth.
His father was a subject/ciitizen
of Kenya/Great Britain at the time of his birth and afterwards.

His mother was too young to pass on her US citizenship
according to the law in effect when he was born.

Check it out:

His usurpation cannot be corrected by Congress,
it can only be corrected by his resignation, his removal
by an amendment to the Constitution
which will never happen.

WASHINGTON D.C., April 1, 2009: In a move certain to fuel the debate over Obama's qualifications for the presidency, the group "Americans for Freedom of Information" has released copies of President Obama's college transcripts from Occidental College. Released today, the transcript indicates that Obama, under the name Barry Soetoro, received financial aid as a foreign student from Indonesia as an undergraduate at the school. The transcript was released by Occidental College in compliance with a court order in a suit brought by the group in the Superior Court of California. The transcript shows that Obama (Soetoro) applied for financial aid and was awarded a fellowship for foreign students from the Fulbright Foundation Scholarship program. To qualify, for the scholarship, a student must claim foreign citizenship. This document would seem to provide the smoking gun that many of Obama's detractors have been seeking.

The news has created a firestorm at the White House as the release casts increasing doubt about Obama's legitimacy and qualification to serve as president. When reached for comment in London, where he has been in meetings with British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, Obama smiled but refused comment on the issue. Meanwhile, White House press secretary Robert Gibbs scoffed at the report stating that this was obviously another attempt by a right-wing conservative group to discredit the president and undermine the administration's efforts to move the country in a new direction.

Britain's Daily Mail has also carried the story in a front-page article titled, "Obama Eligibility Questioned", leading some to speculate that the story may overshadow economic issues on Obama's first official visit to the U.K.

In a related matter, under growing pressure from several groups, Justice Antonin Scalia announced that the Supreme Court agreed on Tuesday to hear arguments concerning Obama's legal eligibility to serve as President in a case brought by Leo Donofrio of New Jersey. This lawsuit claims Obama's dual citizenship disqualified him from serving as president. Donofrio's case is just one of 18 suits brought by citizens demanding proof of Obama's citizenship or qualification to serve as president.

Gary Kreep of the United States Justice Foundation has released the results of their investigation of Obama's campaign spending. This study estimates that Obama has spent upwards of $950,000 in campaign funds in the past year with eleven law firms in 12 states for legal resources to block disclosure of any of his personal records. Mr. Kreep indicated that the investigation is still ongoing but that the final report will be provided to the U.S. attorney general, Eric Holder. Mr. Holder has refused to comment on the matter.

According to Associated Press story shown below, Obama's tramscripts from Occidential College show that he was an undergradraduate at the school under the name Barry Soetoro, and received financial aid as a foreign student from Indonesia. I did a search using "Smoking gun finally found."
Here are a few of the websites that came up. None said it was false.;article3895;title=APFN
